Wolves should reignite interest in 'aggressive' former Lage target, after top battle with Harry Kane - opinion

Wolves fans are looking forward to seeing what the club do this summer, after a bright start on the transfers front.

Rodrigo Gomes joined the club last week from Braga, with Tommy Doyle having also turned his loan move to the club permanent.

Then, on Monday, Wolves pulled off something of a shock. They reached an agreement to sign highly-rated Brazilian youngster Pedro Lima from Sport Recife.

Wolves won’t be stopping there, with Gary O’Neil determined to have a bigger squad for 2024/25.

It will be interesting to see if the head coach will be dipping into the market for a new centre-back this summer.

Certainly, if Max Kilman were to leave the club – amid speculation linking him with West Ham United – then he may well move for a new face.

And one man Wolves ought to consider, is Nikola Milenkovic.

England edged past Serbia in their first group stage match at Euro 2024 on Sunday night, with Jude Bellingham scoring the only goal of the game.

It was not a convincing display from the Three Lions, and Serbia really restricted them to very few opportunities.

By and large, the Serbs were solid defensively – and Nikola Milenkovic really stood out going up against Harry Kane, who was limited to just two – yes, two – touches in the first-half.

Milenkovic, who plays his club football with Fiorentina, stuck to Kane like glue and hardly gave him a sniff.

The England captain came into the game more in the second-half and did link up much better with his teammates.

But there wasn’t much danger of a Kane goal thanks to the close marking from Milenkovic, who made four clearances in the match (via Sofascore) and had 95% pass accuracy (76/80).

Perhaps he would make a good replacement for Kilman at Wolves. The captain is currently the subject of interest from West Ham United, and he may end up being sold, even though the club currently want to keep him.

Milenkovic is a fearsome player, standing at 6ft 5in tall. This allows him to dominate in the air, as evidenced by an 80% aerial duel success rate in Serie A last term (compared to Kilman’s 70% in the Premier League, via fbref.com).

He is also good on the ball. Last term, he finished with a pass completion rate of 84.7%. For context, Kilman’s in the Premier League was 85.7%.

Milenkovic is a former Wolves target

Milenkovic is actually someone who has been linked with a move to Wolves before.

Back in the summer of 2021 Wolves were linked with a move for the 26-year-old, and then again leading up to the January transfer window, because the club were losing Romain Saiss and Willy Boly to AFCON.

Milenkovic has been with Fiorentina for quite a while now. He joined them in 2017 from Partizan Belgrade, and it’s possible he could be ready for a new chapter.

He likely wouldn’t come cheap for Wolves as he has a contract until the summer of 2027.

But if a big offer comes in for Kilman, then perhaps the club would be in a position to bring him in.

Seeing how he played against Kane, with that impressive aggression and physicality, it’s hard to imagine how he wouldn’t be really well suited to the English game.
