Kyle Petty was thrilled with the NASCAR Cup Series’ debut at Iowa Speedway, but Kyle Busch’s performance continues to stick in his craw.

In an interesting comparison, Petty likened Busch’s move from Joe Gibbs Racing to Richard Childress Racing to Kyle Larson’s move earlier in his career from Chip Ganassi Racing to Hendrick Motorsports. Evidently, Petty believes the team you’re on has as much of an impact on where you stand as the driver’s talent.

The NASCAR analyst is of the opinion that Richard Childress Racing hasn’t done Busch any favors since he’s come over to their team, and that something needs to change before it’s too late for their partnership, and Iowa was another example of why they need to be swift about it.

“Build it and they will come. It might take 19 or 20 years, but eventually NASCAR will come, if you build a race track. Newton, Iowa. What a great race. I really enjoyed it. I was pleasantly surprised. I saw a lot of passing, back in the pack. We saw some passes for the lead. I thought it was what a NASCAR race should be, competitive, from start to finish. That’s all you can ask for, as a fan. It was competitive for everyone, but Kyle Busch. Where has Kyle Busch gone? I have no idea,” Petty questioned, regarding the two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion. “He started last season pretty strong and I thought, ‘Man, this is pretty good. You go from Gibbs to Childress, you make that organization a winner,’ and then they disappear. Crickets from he and Austin Dillon, which points fingers back at the organization. Richard Childress Racing, RCR.

“Now, I say that because I’m going to put Kyle Larson in that same position. Kyle Larson won six races with Chip Ganassi. It took Rick Hendrick, 2021 to today, he’s won 20 races. It took Chip Ganassi to keep Kyle Larson from winning. The organization has made Kyle Larson a better winner. The organization has taken Kyle Busch from being a competitive winning driver, to just be in a guy racing for eighth, ninth and tenth. He’s only had five top tens, two top fives this year. In his entire career, he has only gone five times — five out of 19 or 20 years, has he gone the first 11 races and not won. He’s not winning now. They say you make your own luck, Kyle Busch has made his own luck at RCR racing.”

It’s certainly fair for Kyle Petty to wonder what’s wrong with Kyle Busch at Richard Childress Racing, and that’s an interesting comparison regarding Kyle Larson and his move to Hendrick Motorsports. Time will tell, but the clock is ticking for Busch and RCR to figure out what’s been ailing their team, and rectify things.
