'Best idea' - Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Erik ten Hag told Man Utd player must be sold as solution would be perfect for both parties

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Erik ten Hag have been urged to sell one Manchester United player this summer and avoid a “bit of uproar” at Old Trafford.

That is according to Manchester United legend Teddy Sheringham, who believes the “best idea” for one player would be to continue their career away from United.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who captured a minority stake in United in 2023, will be at the helm of his first summer transfer window as co-owner of the Premier League club.

The 71-year-old British billionaire’s Ineos team took control of football operations at Old Trafford after he acquired his stake in the Red Devils.

Ratcliffe and Ineos have already made the key decision to retain the services of United boss Erik ten Hag after they completed their end-of-season review.

Ten Hag is under contract with the Premier League club until 2025 and Ratcliffe’s Ineos team is expected to offer the Dutchman a new contract.

Ratcliffe will allocate funds for the Red Devils’ summer transfer window, with Ten Hag desperate to reinforce his squad options ahead of next season.

Sheringham would sell Man Utd player

Teddy Sheringham believes that it is time for Manchester United to push ahead with the departure of Mason Greenwood this summer.

Mason Greenwood spent last season out on loan at La Liga club Getafe after United confirmed the former England international’s future at Old Trafford was over.

United in 2023 had conducted a six-month internal investigation into the Red Devils player after he was arrested in 2022 following allegations made against him.

The charges against Greenwood were dropped in 2023, but United made the decision to let the former Three Lions forward leave in the future.

Greenwood is under contract with United until 2025 and the 22-year-old was able to return to first-team football during his spell with Getafe.

Speaking to The Daily Express, Sheringham said: “Yeah, I do [think it’d be best for all parties if he were sold].

“With what’s gone on with Mason, it would’ve been very hard for him to come back to United and play there. I think there would’ve been a bit of uproar.

“So, for him to be playing abroad, not keeping a low profile but keeping a low profile in English football, I think it’s the best idea.”

Sheringham on Greenwood’s future

Greenwood’s loan deal with Getafe expires on 30th June, but he has attracted interest from clubs like Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund and Napoli.

The United player has also been heavily linked with a move to Juventus, with the Red Devils keen to sanction a sale for Greenwood.

Sheringham remains unsure if Greenwood will ever be able to return to international duty with England, even if he revives his club career abroad.

“It’d be interesting to see if he does really well at Juventus [amid reports they’ve agreed personal terms] and starts getting back into the England fold,” he added.

“Whether he will get picked again, that’ll be a big question mark. We’ll have to wait and see.”
