Romanian President Klaus Iohannis is withdrawing his candidacy for NATO Secretary-General, according to NOS.

According to the source, Iohannis will announce his withdrawal in the near future.

The journalists explain that the Romanian president will make this decision after Hungary decided to support the candidacy of Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte for the post of NATO Secretary-General.

Thus, the head of the Dutch government will be the only candidate for the post of Secretary-General.

What happened before

Earlier today, on June 18, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban promised that his country would support the candidacy of Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte for the post of NATO Secretary-General.

Slovak President Peter Pellegrini also made a similar statement.

For Rutte to become the new Secretary-General after Jens Stoltenberg, he must secure the support of all the leaders of the 32 NATO countries.
