Freedom Caucus Chair Bob Good (R-VA) is running a close race against MAGA ally John McGuire in Virginia's primary Tuesday night, after several of his Republican colleagues, including GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump turned against him earlier this year.

Former US Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) spoke with CNN's Kaitlan Collins about what such a tight race for an incumbent like Good means for the Republican Party.

"In this race in Virginia, Bob Good and John McGuire are both pitching themselves as the one who's in lockstep with Donald Trump," Collins noted, "but there's basically are no policy differences between the two of them. I mean, how are voters really supposed to make a decision here?"

The former GOP leader replied, "Well, in my mind, it's like would you rather have dysentery or the flu? So, you got to pick that out and ultimately at least one of them is going to lose. That's the good thing."

Kinzinger continued, "Really, just from the raw politics of it, it does show the power of Donald Trump's endorsement, but it also shows that Donald Trump never forgives you. Especially if somebody that is more loyal to him comes out."

Good lost Trump's support after the Virginia lawmaker endorsed Florida Republican Ron DeSantis for president.

The Freedom Caucus chair has since endorsed the former president, and even traveled to New York to defend the MAGA hopeful amid his Manhattan hush money trial last month.

Kinzinger continued, "And this is the point, this is how you build a cult. You do this. You make everybody scared to turn against you, and that's what you're seeing right now."
