‘News to bring you': Sky Sports claim £40k-a-week Everton player could sign new contract very shortly

Everton’s summer seems set to be one of preservation rather than revolution, although for most fans, that is enough.

If they can hold on to the bulk of their prized assets whilst adding depth for a cut price, it is widely accepted that this squad is good enough to stay up again.

Fortunately, that seems to be a theory that Sean Dyche and Kevin Thelwell are subscribing to, with this latest news update providing an key deal that seems to be closing in.

Ashley Young closes in on new Everton deal

As reported yesterday, Sky Sports have offered an important update on the ongoing contract talks between Everton and Ashley Young.

It was widely expected that a new deal would be offered to the 38-year-old, however there was far more interest in the future of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who has just one year left on his deal, as well as Ben Godfrey and Seamus Coleman.

With the latter now tied down for one more year, it only made sense to follow suit with their other reliable full-back.

The reporter claimed, on the £40k-a-week star: ‘Bit of breaking news to bring you now concerning Ashley Young, close to finalising a new one-year contract with Everton. The last stages of the deal are being sorted, confirmation could come in the next week.’

Another wise move from Kevin Thelwell

If the funds are not in place for the Toffees to add to their current squad, the very least they can do is ensure it does not fall apart.

So whether that be big-money transfers or allowing contracts to expire, Thelwell will be desperate to ensure that the bulk of Dyche’s first-team remains at Goodison Park going into the new Premier League campaign.

And whilst Young might not be the most revered player at the club, he remains a solid and usually-reliable asset, who offers great leadership and versatility to benefit his teammates.

It is not a decision that will command headlines, nor will it transform Everton overnight.

But by slowly cementing a team that should have finished comfortably mid-table were it not for two deductions, positive steps towards sustainability and stability are being achieved.

With Everton also trying to sign Tim Iroegbunam too, it does seem like by the end of the summer, Dyche will be blessed with a side slightly strengthened from last season.

That is, if they can ward off transfer interest from Manchester United for Jarrad Branthwaite.
