Frustrated Aberdeen fans left fuming as Connor Barron closes in on move to Rangers

Anyone with even a passing interest in Scottish football knows that Aberdeen supporters aren’t exactly the biggest fans of Rangers.

Whilst the Dons faithful will insist that their discontent with Glasgow’s Scottish footballing duopoly extends the length of the Clyde, it’s Rangers and not Celtic for whom vehemence is most closely reserved.

Stuck away up in the northeast of the country, over the last few years in particular Aberdeen fans have developed a particular distaste towards Rangers

They aren’t the only ones either; as the Gers have tried to get their house in order post-2012 followers of Hibs, Dundee United and even Kilmarnock have tried to strike up some kind of rivalry with the Ibrox side.

Aberdeen to their credit are somewhat different; there is history there, albeit ancient in footballing terms.

With the Dons’ greatest years almost certainly behind them, for many of the supporters victory over Rangers can often be the highlight of drab campaign after drab campaign.

But as Rangers, for the umpteenth time, prepare to nab one of the Dandies’ best players it’s fair to say many in the Aberdeen support aren’t taking it well.

Rangers to sign Aberdeen midfielder

When Ryan Jack signed for Rangers in 2017 it sent a shockwave through Pittodrie.

The Aberdeen support saw their captain and a future Scotland international walk out the front gate of the club for nothing when Jacko joined his boyhood heroes.

It was such a scarring moment that the Rangers star couldn’t even kick a ball for Scotland without the Tartan Army’s Aberdeen contingent gnashing their teeth.

With Scott Wright another who swapped red for blue in the search of objectively bigger and better things, you’d have thought the Dons might have gotten used to us poaching their top players.

But the reaction to an imminent Rangers move for Scotland U21 midfielder Connor Barron tells a different story.

As one ex-Pittodrie star in Jack leaves Ibrox another in Barron looks set to join the Gers with Philippe Clement’s team holding off interest from Italy and England to secure a deal.

Whilst nothing is announced at the time of writing, reputable sources up and down the country have been informed the move is a goer and it looks unlikely to collapse at the final moment.

Not that some Aberdeen supporters aren’t praying for it.

Dons fans react to Barron transfer news

Social media is awash with salty Aberdeen fans struggling to cope with Connor Barron deciding to move to Rangers.

The move has led to an outpouring of frustration on X with plenty in Aberdeen left increasingly embittered.

One leading Aberdeen fan has lambasted Barron’s lack of ambition for choosing title challenging, Champions League hopefuls Rangers over the English Championship.

The account has also made it clear the 21-year-old midfielder is no longer welcome at Pittodrie.

Others are insisting he’s rubbish anyway and are actually happy about the deal due to the incoming development fee Aberdeen will fetch.

One fan proclaimed ‘dearie me’ and even pledged to ‘take some time off Twitter’ as he comes to terms with the news.

He is likely to be joined by another fan whose ‘head is on Mars’ after the news broke, and we don’t think you get signal up there!

Another wished their former player all the best but warned him that ‘bench warming at Ibrox’ is good for the bank balance but ‘not great for the career’.

Maybe we can ask Europa League Final starter Scott Wright what he thinks about that.

One particularly angry young lady exclaimed ‘good riddance’ with another fan openly questioning Barron’s intelligence for swapping Pittodrie, yes that’s right Pittodrie, for Ibrox.

At least one of these Aberdeen supporters has had the courage to admit that Connor Barron is a good player.

Connor Barron came through the youth ranks at Aberdeen and went on to make 76 appearances for the club’s first team, netting twice.

Rangers News spoke to former Gers midfielder Kevin Thomson, who worked with Barron at Kelty Hearts, about what the Ibrox side are getting in the midfielder.
