Chelsea discuss 'super fast' attacker who scored more league goals than Cole Palmer last season - journalist

Chelsea are now reportedly interested in signing an attacker who scored more league goals than Cole Palmer last season.

Chelsea’s search to sign a new No 9 this summer is one of the most intriguing transfer sagas ongoing right now.

Gianluca Di Marzio has recently claimed that Chelsea have made Atletico Madrid’s Samu Omorodion their priority target for the striker position this summer.

However, there’s plenty of other forwards still linked with Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea discuss Belgian forward

Journalist Simon Phillips has claimed via his Substack on Wednesday that Chelsea showed interest in RB Leipzig’s Lois Openda months ago have been scouting him.

It is now understood that the 24-year-old striker has been discussed again by the Blues as a potential target.

Phillips adds that it could be too tough to sign the Belgium international in this window because he only joined Bundesliga club Leipzig last summer.

Openda scored 28 goals across all competitions last season during his first year as a Leipzig player, including 24 in the German top division. Interestingly, that’s more league goals than Chelsea’s Cole Palmer managed in the Premier League in the last campaign (22).

Lois Openda a great option

When you compare Openda to some of Chelsea’s other striker targets, he looks like a really great option.

He’s quick, strong and pretty experienced for someone his age. The 24-year-old’s already played and scored goals in Germany, Belgium, France and the Netherlands.

Described as “super fast” by Philippe Clement (Ligue 1 website), Openda could be well suited to the Premier League.

This sounds like a smarter deal to us and taking a punt on any inexperienced youngster.
