'Sounds ominous': Journalist issues update on future of 'quality' Wrexham target

Portsmouth boss John Mousinho has issued a key update on the future of Wrexham target Joe Morrell.

Wrexham supporters are looking forward to life back in League One after Phil Parkinson guided the club to consecutive promotions.

An important transfer window awaits the club as Parkinson aims to assemble a squad capable of challenging the league’s big hitters, including recently relegated Birmingham City and Huddersfield Town.

The 56-year-old has been handed a healthy budget by Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds to bolster his starting XI, although the Wrexham boss has been scouring the leagues for quality free agents.

A recent name to pop up on the radar is midfielder Joe Morrell, who is fresh from winning the League One title with Portsmouth.

The Welsh international played a key role under John Mousinho but his future at Fratton Park is up in the air as he’s yet to receive a new contract.

Morrell’s current deal expires this summer and an update has now been given on his future.

Wrexham receive a promising Joe Morrell update

Morrell has been capped 37 times by Wales and would be a great addition to Parkinson’s engine room.

The 27-year-old would add competition for advanced midfielders Elliot Lee and Andy Cannon while offering protection for defensive titan George Evans.

Luckily, their chances of landing the “quality” talent have been boosted as Pompey journalist Neil Allen believes Mousinho’s latest comments on Morrell “sound ominous”.

When Mousinho was asked about the Welshman’s future, he told Portsmouth News: “Joe is a fantastic player, I think there are some areas we have to make sure we get right with both him and Zak, we had reasons for not taking up their options. It’s just about getting that balance right.

“Obviously with Joe we have the injury to contend with as well, but he is an international player and was excellent last season for large periods.

“He captained the side in the absence of Marlon as well. I regard Joe really highly and we will get the update on how it’s going.”

Wrexham can land a bargain in Joe Morrell

By the looks of it, Mousinho is trying to sugarcoat the situation by showering Morrell with praise yet the midfielder hasn’t been offered fresh terms.

Surely if they wanted him to commit his future to the club, they would have offered him a new contract but the fact they haven’t suggests he could be on his way out.

This means that Wrexham could land their first bargain of the summer by getting a deal for Morrell over the line.

The “towering” Welshman is fresh from winning a title with Pompey, and although he would have liked a shot at the Championship, the project in Wales is an attractive proposition for most players.

McElhenney’s and Reynolds comments suggest that Wrexham will be going hammer and tong to win promotion next season.

Showing ambition in the transfer market and landing a seasoned title-winning midfielder – like Morrell – would be a fantastic start to fulfilling that aim.
