'Im joking': Alan Shearer makes sly dig about Sunderland as David Moyes opens up on Wearside spell

Alan Shearer has made a sly dig towards Sunderland in his recent interview with David Moyes.

David Moyes joined Alan Shearer, Micah Richards and Gary Lineker in today’s episode of The Rest is Footballpodcast.

The 61-year-old left West Ham this summer, after two spells spanning over seven years.

Moyes guided the Irons to their first major trophy since winning the FA Cup in 1980, as they beat Fiorentina in the Europa Conference League final last year.

The victory came six years after Moyes took Sunderland down to the Championship, after replacing England-bound Sam Allardyce in July 2016.

Alan Shearer makes sly joke towards Sunderland

The manager has now been reflecting on his career and has spoken briefly about his time with Wearside, with Shearer making a sly joke towards his rival club.

When speaking on the podcast, the former Newcastle United striker said: “All good things come to an end. When did you decide to go to the unwashed?

After his co-hosts reacted in shock and laughter, Shearer said, “I’m joking, Sunderland fans, I’m joking!”

The 53-year-old then asked for his comment to be removed from the episode, before Lineker demanded he ‘pay the price’.

Moyes went onto discuss his time at the Stadium of Light, saying: “Well, actually, in that period when I came back, I was very close to getting back to Everton. It didn’t quite happen. I met Everton.

“I had spoken with Celtic as well at the time. I’d gone to Celtic. And when both of them went away for different reasons, Sunderland were there.

“I knew Martin Bain really well from his Scottish connections. And the Sunderland job was up big. Sam had done the job, just got the England job.

“And I thought, well, why would I not go in and do the job? Sunderland is a great club, really good club. And I don’t know if you can attract all the players to the Northeast.

“That’s tough, yeah. It’s really tough. And Newcastle now are doing attracting some great players up there, but maybe that’s because if you pay well enough, you get them.

“That’s it, but Sunderland at the time, we were having to have a sort of maybe not quite the top level player. It took its course in the end.”

David Moyes will never be forgiven on Wearside

David Moyes left Sunderland with his reputation in tatters, having done a particularly poor job at a club that hadn’t been in the Championship since 2007.

He has since somewhat redeemed himself with his time at West Ham, but Black Cats fans will never be won over by his capabilities as a manager.

Perhaps he just never wanted to be at Sunderland in the first place, but it was bound to be a disaster as soon as he claimed the club were in a relegation battle after just two matches.

Sunderland’s results were terrible and nobody seemed bothered about staying up like they had in previous years.

Moyes brought in the most uninspiring transfers the club had seen – with the likes of Donald Love, Steven Pienaar and Adnan Januzaj expected to retain their Premier League status.

Supporters always wonder what would have happened if Allardyce had stayed, but even if he had relegated them, it would have ended on a much better note than it did under Moyes.
