Thousands of US car dealerships see software outage after cyberattack

Thousands of car dealerships in the United States were paralysed for hours on Wednesday after a cyberattack on a software provider.

The affected company, CDK Global, specializes in automotive retail. According to the firm, its software is used at nearly 15,000 car dealer locations.

Following a cyberattack, "we proactively shut all systems down and executed extensive testing and consulted with external third-party experts," a CDK spokeswoman said.

According to the company, its "core DMS and Digital Retailing solutions" were restored a few hours later.

With one software often used across one industry, cyberattacks often paralyse a plethora of businesses.

An attack on US IT services provider Kaseya in 2021 was felt as far as Sweden, where supermarket chain Coop was forced to shut down almost all of its branches.
