'Really disappointed': David Moyes says another Scotland defender deserves blame for Anthony Ralston error

Scotland’s draw with Switzerland last night keeps Celtic’s interest in Euro 2024 until Sunday at least.

With four Celtic players in his squad, Steve Clark’s team can still create history with a win over Hungary at the weekend and get out of the group stages for the first time in Scotland’s history.

Taking an early lead after a Callum McGregor assist, a mistake by Anthony Ralston let Swiss striker, Shaqiri, in to place a superb shot into Angus Gunn’s top right-hand corner.

With the game finishing 1-1, fingers of blame were immediately being pointed at the Celtic defender for his part in the Swiss goal but David Moyes knows exactly who was to blame for it.

David Moyes says Celtic defender is not to blame

With Scotland cruising, a cross-field pass by Ralston didn’t find its target and we all know what happened next.

But Moyes explains how the Celtic defender was let down by another Scotland teammate.

Moyes said [ITV Football], “I was really disappointed with Grant Hanley’s pass.

“I thought it was much easier to keep the ball in the grass, roll it into Billy Gilmour who could have dealt with it a lot easier.

“He’s struggling to deal with it. I know it’s Ralston who’s going to take the hit for a bit. I think Grant Hanley had a better chance to play a better pass.”

There is a certain section of Scottish fans who just can’t wait to take a pop at Celtic’s players for their performances for Scotland at the Euros.

Now that Moyes has pointed out that Ralston wasn’t totally to blame for the Swiss equaliser, that should at least make those fans take back their criticism, right?

Of course not but Ralston did do his part in getting Scotland a point with a fine second-half performance. Let’s hope he can carry that form into Sunday night’s game, get Scotland qualified and shut those people up who have been on his back since the tournament kicked off.
