What former Liverpool player Xherdan Shaqiri was spotted doing with Andy Robertson on the pitch after Switzerland vs Scotland

Xherdan Shaqiri sent Liverpool fans a reminder of what he can do with a lovely strike at Euro 2024 on Wednesday.

Shaqiri is one of the most decorated footballers in Europe having won plenty with Basel, Bayern Munich, Inter Milan and Liverpool.

However, the Swiss was perhaps a little underused during his three years at Anfield. Despite winning the Premier League and Champions League with Liverpool, Shaqiri only played 63 times for the Reds.

Despite this lack of appearances, the 32-year-old remained a firm fan favourite during his time at Liverpool. And he also has a handy knack of turning up for his country on the biggest stages.

That continued at this summer’s Euros, where Shaqiri dismayed Andy Robertson by piling a beautiful left-footed strike into the top corner of the Scotland goal.

Andy Robertson shares moment with Xherdan Shaqiri

There was a nice image before the game as Robertson embraced Shaqiri in the tunnel.

Although he hasn’t been part of the Liverpool squad for three years now, Shaqiri has confessed to still being a fan of the Reds.

But despite his favouritism towards the Reds, the Swiss held no such sentiment during the game for Robertson.

Shaqiri’s goal to bring his country level – and ultimately earn them a point – was so typical of him. Latching onto a loose ball, the forward bent in a lovely left-footed effort from outside the area.

The goal meant that Shaqiri is now the only player to have scored in the past three European Championships and the past three World Cups. Over to you, Cristiano Ronaldo.

With the game finishing 1-1, both sides were rightfully happy with their work. For Robertson and Scotland they still have a chance of progressing, while the Swiss are now virtually guaranteed to be in the round of 16.

And as spotted by one user on social media site X, Robertson and Shaqiri certainly looked happy enough after the game.

With the two sets of players shaking hands on the pitch, the current and former Liverpool players share a moment. Embraced in a half-hug, Robertson and Shaqiri look fully engaged in a deep conversation.

Where is Xherdan Shaqiri playing now

There was a sense of inevitability that Shaqiri would end up having his say for Switzerland this summer.

Although he’s now coming towards the back end of his career, the former Liverpool man simply always turns up at major tournaments.

In quite incredible fashion, Shaqiri’s goal are always so memorable, too. It’s no surprise that he’s done it again, at Robertson’s expense.

In terms of his playing career though, Shaq is no longer at the top of the game. After leaving Liverpool for Lyon in 2021, Shaqiri was shipped out to MLS side Chicago Fire after just six months.

Since joining in January 2022, the former Bayern man has 16 goals in 75 games for the Fire.

33 later this year, it seems like we may have seen the end of Shaqiri in Europe. But if this is his swansong, then it’s looking like he’ll go out in typical Shaq fashion.
