‘May as well retire’: Two drivers told they already have no hope of scoring points at the Spanish GP - pundit

The Circuit de Barcelona Catalunya is one of the most technically demanding circuits on the Formula 1 calendar.

It is why teams usually test their cars at the Spanish Grand Prix circuit with the premise being if it’s good at that track, then it will suit the majority of high and medium-speed circuits.

Italian tyre makers, Pirelli, will be bringing three of its hardest 2024 dry tyre compounds to the race weekend, with them anticipating higher temperatures because the race will take place three weeks later than in 2023.

This means thermal degradation could be an issue for teams to get on top of, with Haas singled out by former Le Mans class winner, Richard Bradley, on the On Track GP Podcast.

Haas drivers ‘may as well just retire’

Bradley anticipates the track will pose an issue for Haas given their long-standing tyre problems, which often leads to both Nico Hulkenberg and Kevin Magnussen having impressive qualifying sessions then dropping out of the points in the race.

“The problem with the circuit is that it’s very biased in the high speed, long right-handers, and the front left tyres because the surface is aggressive and just wears completely,” said Bradley.

“So overtaking is impossible and you can never push the car because the front left dies, then you get graining in all conditions, and the car never feels good.

“I don’t want to say too much, but they [Haas] may as well just retire already because they’re not going to be scoring points.”

Haas improves tyre fortunes

Haas’ car was characterised by its inherent tyre issues last year, which would lead to both Magnussen and Hulkenberg being unable to drive 100% throughout a race.

When preparing the VF-24 during pre-season testing in Bahrain, Haas spent most of its time completing long runs in a bid to reduce the tyre wear issues that plagued their 2023 season.

It appeared to pay off for the team when Hulkenberg scored points in the second round before both drivers scored points during the Australian Grand Prix, despite team principal Ayao Komatsu voicing his concerns over the tyre compound choices.

Although Magnussen’s driving tactics have been the subject of controversy at various points this season, the team has demonstrated that it can reliably run in the points during races.

With several of their rivals bringing significant updates to the Spanish Grand Prix, it will be down to who manages to improve their car quickest in the battle for sixth in the Constructors’ Championship.
