Rabiot urges French to go the the polls but won't reveal his position

Midfielder Adrien Rabiot has become the latest player to urge the French public to go to the polls in an upcoming snap election called by President Emmanuel Macron.

However, unlike team-mates Kylian Mbappe ad Marcus Thuram he would not position himself.

Captain Mbappe and Thuram had expressed shock at the result of the European elections in France earlier this month, where right-wing nationalists saw a strong showing. They called on young French people to take part in the June 30 and July 7 elections.

Rabiot said at the team's Euro 2024 base camp ahead of Friday's match against the Netherlands: "It is about the future of France. It is very important. We have the right to do so [vote] and should use it.

"But everyone can think what they want. We don't want to tell people who they should vote for. We live in a democracy and we should respect that. Whoever gets the most votes will be in power."

French FA president Philippe Diallo has supported that players are speaking out but the federation has also warned against the political usurpation of the players.

Rabiot said: "We have a tournament to play and we don't want to focus too much on other things. It's complicated enough. We try not to think about it all the time."

France started the Euros with a 1-0 victory against Austria and are considered top title favourites.
