Report: Tottenham now keen to sign Spanish player also wanted by Real Madrid

Tottenham are now keen to sign a player from Espanyol – although Ange Postecoglou’s side are set to face competition from Real Madrid, of all clubs.

Since the transfer window opened last Friday (June 14th) Spurs have mainly been searching for a new central defender – by the looks of it – amid talk of strong admiration for Italy international Riccardo Calafiori.

Now – however – there is another position Tottenham are looking to strengthen with a move to sign a Spanish player…

Tottenham want Joan Garcia

A story from respected journalist Ángel García now claims that Tottenham want to bolster their goalkeeping department with a move for Espanyol No.1 Joan Garcia.

It is said that Brighton, Valencia and Real Madrid are also keen to sign the 23-year-old this summer after he enjoyed an impressive 2023/24 campaign with Espanyol.

Garcia made 20 appearances across all competitions last season, keeping 11 clean sheets while only conceding ten goals in total.

Espanyol find themselves in a strong negotiating position, as the man from Sallent de Llobregat still has many years remaining on his contract, which expires in July 2028.

Spurs could be preparing to replace Fraser Forster

Talk of Tottenham wanting to sign a new goalkeeper this summer doesn’t initially make much sense, as Postecoglou already has a standout No.1 in Guglielmo Vicario, and several backup options in Fraser Forster, Brandon Austin – who recently signed a new contract – and also Alfie Whiteman.

Therefore, seeing as Forster is by far the oldest of the quartet at the age of 36 – and also has just 12 months remaining on his contract – Garcia could be viewed as a replacement for the England international.

It also cannot be ruled out that Spurs sign the Spaniard and then look to sell Forster this summer for a fee, before he departs on a free transfer in 2025.
