Title holder Vingegaard fit after crash and nominated for Tour

Jonas Vingegaard has recovered from a crash in April and is fit to aim for a third straight Tour de France title from June 29 onwards.

Denmark's Vingegaard and Belgian nine-time stage winner Wout van Aert head the Visma-Lease a Bike team which announced its team for the three-week classic on Thursday.

"I am excited to start the Tour," Vingegaard said in a team statement.

"The last few months have not always been easy. We have worked together to get to this moment, and of course, I am very excited to see where I stand. I feel good and very motivated."

Vingegaard, 27, broke his collarbone several ribs and a finger, and also damaged his lung when he fell in a descent during the Basque Country stage race on April 4.

He spent 12 days in hospital and returned to training a month later.

"I am very proud of Jonas and the coaching team. He is coming back from a serious injury. In the last few weeks, he has shown what a champion he is, both mentally and physically," sporting director Merijn Zeeman said.

"Of course, we don't know how far he can go yet. We are being cautious because he has not been able to race, and his preparation has been less than ideal, to say the least. But he will be there, healthy and motivated."

Vingegaard will be up against the 2020 and 2021 champion Tadej Pogacar, who won the Giro d'Italia last month and is bidding to became the first rider since Marco Pantani in 1998 to claim a Giro and Tour double in one season.

The 111th Tour starts on June 29 in Florence and ends on July 21 in Nice.
