Martin Berliner, from Watlington, was left speechless after being awarded the distinguished title of MBE, in the King’s Birthday Honours list of 2024.

Maccabi GB is Britain’s leading Anglo-Jewish Sports, Health, and Wellbeing Charity with a mission to create inclusive sporting, community, and educational experiences that strengthen Jewish identity, enhance wellbeing and inspire engagement in the Jewish community.

Martin was overwhelmed by the honour and said he was speechless on receiving the letter from the Cabinet Office.

He said: “My first thought was of my late parents, I so wish I could share this moment with them and thank them for all their love and support along the way.

“Notwithstanding this personal honour, I am delighted that the work Maccabi GB delivers every day to our community and beyond has been recognised in this way.

“The work the Maccabi Movement does in Great Britain didn't start with me and didn't end with my retirement, long may the organisation continue to go from strength to strength.

“Few achieve success on their own and I am no different.

“My thanks must go to the Presidents, Vice Presidents, Chairs, Trustees, and large number of selfless volunteers who I have served with for over 20 years both nationally and internationally.

“I want to thank them all for their hard work, support, and for the trust they put in me.

“This recognition is for all of you and your tireless dedication to our communities both in Great Britain and across Europe where I am currently supporting the Chairman and Executive of Maccabi Europe.”

Maccabi GB changed his life Martin said and he and the family are delighted to have created so many friendships along the way.

He added: “We set out to make a difference and collectively we have done this and I have no doubt that the organisation will continue to do so in the future.”
