'My understanding': Romano explains what Liverpool are now doing in the transfer market after Slot's first day

Liverpool are yet to fully attack the transfer market having seen a change in management this summer.

The Reds had become used to getting business done early under Jurgen Klopp, but this year has seen a change in tack.

With Arne Slot waiting until the third week of June to officially settle in at the AXA Training Centre, things are going to be a little different for Liverpool.

That doesn’t mean that work isn’t being done, though. Slot confirmed during his first interview with the club on Wednesday that conversations are ongoing about potential signings with sporting director Richard Hughes.

As links to players like Leny Yoro heat up, journalist Fabrizio Romano has shared what he now expects to happen at Anfield.

Arne Slot begins Liverpool reign

Some Liverpool supporters were starting to get a little antsy about the lack of sighting of Slot.

But it’s safe to say that that is all now history. The Dutchman is clearly all-in at the club and has confirmed some of his coaching team to boot.

There was a surprise announcement from Slot on Wednesday as he confirmed that Liverpool have hired 33-year-old goalkeeping coach Fabian Otte. It seems as though fans will have to wait a little longer for any additions to the playing squad, though.

Writing in his Daily Briefing column on Thursday, transfer expert Romano said that things were ‘quiet’ for the time being at Liverpool.

“Arne Slot had his first official day at Liverpool yesterday as he spoke to club media at the training ground, but what’s going on with the Reds’ plans for the transfer market this summer?” posed the reporter. “So far it’s quiet, but there are always stories in the media.”

Romano then went on to address potential interest from Liverpool in Germany international Waldemar Anton.

“One name linked is Stuttgart captain Waldemar Anton,” he says. “Still, my understanding is more that Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund both like him, and so German clubs are pushing for Anton.

“Xabi Alonso is a big fan and would really like to bring him in as a new signing for Leverkusen this summer.”

Liverpool weighing up move for Riccardo Calafiori

In past windows we have become used to seeing Liverpool attack the transfer market very early on.

This time last year they’d already signed Alexis Mac Allister, for example, and weren’t far off sealing the addition of Dominik Szoboszlai, too.

But with a change in management and the presence of both the Copa America and Euro 2024, things were always going to be different this time.

Nevertheless, that doesn’t mean Liverpool aren’t doing anything at all.

The Reds look likely to bring in a new centre-back and while Yoro remains a target, credible links are also coming to Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori.

It may take slightly longer than usual, but we’re still backing Liverpool to do the business they need to.
