Middlesbrough can repeat Gaston Ramirez trick by signing Sheffield United transfer target - opinion

Michael Carrick should repeat a transfer trick previously used at Middlesbrough to help the club secure promotion to the Premier League.

Middlesbrough were last relegated from the Premier League in the 2016/17 season and have found it difficult to mount any serious promotion push since then.

Boro are gearing up for a third campaign in the Championship under Michael Carrick and will be keen to improve on their eighth-place finish from last season.

The Teessiders reached the play-off semi-finals in 2022/23 before losing to Coventry City, but a number of injury issues and exits last summer meant the North East outfit fell just short of the top six last term.

In a bid to finally end their long-awaited return to the top flight, Boro have been active on the transfer front this summer.

Luke Ayling has joined on a free transfer from Leeds, Aidan Morris will complete a permanent switch next month and Delano Burgzorg has signed from Mainz 05.

Former Arsenal star Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain targeted by Sheffield United

Despite Middlesbrough already making a number of signings this summer, their squad can still be improved upon.

Further quality reinforcements across all areas of the pitch would hand Carrick and co a better chance of finally winning promotion.

Now, a former Premier League player has been garnering interest from one of Boro’s promotion rivals, Sheffield United.

The player in question is ex-Arsenal and Liverpool star Alex Oxalde-Chamberlain, who is currently plying his trade in Turkey with Besiktas.

Turkish outlet Hurriyet report Sheffield United and Southampton want to bring the 30-year-old back to England and discussions over a transfer have started.

Middlesbrough can repeat Gaston Ramirez promotion trick with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

While Middlesbrough are not named as an interested party at present, it would be smart for the Teessiders to move for Oxlade-Chamberlain.

The thought of the Championship outfit signing someone of Oxlade-Chamberlain’s quality may seem outlandish to some but Boro have completed a similar move in the past to great reward.

When fighting for promotion under Aitor Karanka in 2015/16, Middlesbrough signed Gaston Ramirez on loan from Southampton.

The South American was a Premier League-quality player at the time and his move came as a surprise to many in the North East.

However, Ramirez’s addition proved to be crucial in Boro earning promotion to the top flight that campaign.

He only signed in January but was able to score seven goals and provide four assists in 18 league outings as the Reds went on to finish second in the table that year.

As a result, Middlesbrough should look to join the race for Oxlade-Chamberlain this year and hope he brings the same success Ramirez did eight years ago.
