Steve Cooper has been newly appointed as Leicester City boss after Enzo Maresca left for Chelsea, with the Welshman now explaining why he attended Wrexham matches at the Racecourse last season.
Wrexham’s popularity has grown immensely since Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney purchased the club in 2021.
From gaining millions of followers across their social media accounts to skyrocketing ticket sales and thousands of Americans tuning into their matches, the Welsh side have grown rapidly in just three years.
Wrexham’s success has followed an upward trajectory on the pitch, with Phil Parkinson’s men achieving back-to-back promotions.
McElhenney and Reynolds have even said that A-list celebrities are now taking an interest in their rise, revealing that NFL stars Travis and Jason Kelce are keen on attending a Wrexham game very soon alongside pop star Taylor Swift.
They would join new Leicester City boss Steve Cooper in watching Parkinson’s side as he attended multiple games at the Racecourse last term.
Why Steve Cooper attended Wrexham matches at the Racecourse
Cooper was dismissed from his role at Nottingham Forest in December 2023 following a successful two years and three months at the club.
He led Forest into the Premier League in his first season in charge, achieving promotion through the play-offs before consolidating their position at England’s top table.
Unfortunately, Cooper was sacked midway through the 2023/24 campaign after the Reds lost five games on the bounce and was replaced by Nuno Espirito Santo.
This gave the 44-year-old a rare opportunity to take in some football elsewhere, with The Athletic revealing he watched all sorts of games at home and abroad, including his local club Wrexham, on their way to promotion into League One.
Cooper was signed by Wrexham in the late 90’s but never made an appearance and after a less than inspiring playing career, he stepped into management, first coaching England under-16s and under-17s before taking on roles at Swansea City, Forest and now Leicester.
From his midweek jaunts abroad to cold afternoons at the Racecourse, the reason behind his attendance at so many matches was to take in as much new information as he could, to prove he’s evolving, as good managers always do.
Steve Cooper would have been impressed with Wrexham
It isn’t disclosed which Wrexham matches Cooper watched however, he would have been impressed with what he saw from Parkinson’s side.
They only lost three of their 23 matches at home, winning on 17 occasions and scoring a mammoth 62 goals – the most of any side in England’s top four divisions.
Wrexham played very entertaining football at the Racecourse; it’s fast, expansive and fun to watch them dismantle teams.
The Reds posted 6-0 victories over Morecambe and Forest Green Rovers at home and Cooper may have taken some notes from how Parkinson’s attack carved open teams at will.
