Germany plans to order 105 Leopard 2A8 tanks, spending nearly 3 billion euros as part of NATO's plan to deter Russia, Reuters reports.
However, the project still requires approval from parliament. The Bundeswehr expects to receive these tanks between 2027 and 2030.
Reuters notes that part of the tanks will be used to equip a German brigade in Lithuania, established under NATO's plan to deter Russia.
The document states that a significant portion of the procurement was unfunded, as the regular budget and special funds of 100 billion euros, created after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, were insufficient.
Therefore, the German Ministry of Defense is requesting extraordinary financial authorization for this procurement.
What is known about this tank
The Leopard 2A8 is the latest modification of the German main battle tank Leopard 2.
It is equipped with modern armor protection, an enhanced active defense system, and a more powerful engine, significantly increasing its combat effectiveness and survivability on the battlefield. The tank features an improved fire control system and thermal sights, allowing for precise shooting in any weather conditions and during night operations.
The Leopard 2A8 also incorporates advanced communication and management technologies, enabling integration into military command networks.
