Former Texas Longhorns wide receiver/ running back Savion Red has a new college football home in the upcoming 2024 season. According to Insider Texas’ Joe Cook, Red has just committed to playing for the Nevada Wolf Pack this year.

The former wide receiver turned running back has been weighing his options for nearly two months since entering the transfer portal in mid-April. Red made the decision to exit the Longhorns program just after they wrapped up their spring practices, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, who revealed the news of his initial decision to transfer via social media on April 22.

Red played his high school football at Grand Prairie High School in Grand Prairie, TX, where he became a three-star prospect with an industry ranking of 83.65. As a member of the 2022 recruiting class, he ranked 1221 nationally, 176 at wide receiver, and was the 183rd best recruit to come out of the state of Texas that year, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Texas to bolster confident running back room heading into 2024 season

Red was one of two running backs Texas lost on Monday, April 22. His backfield mate Ky Woods also left the Texas program and landed at Nevada, but did so some two weeks ahead of Red. The sophomore running back took to social media to announce his commitment.

Woods played high school football at Clear Springs High School in League City, TX, where he was a three-star prospect with a grade of 80.5. According to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies, he was the No. 1891 overall recruit in the 2022 cycle, No. 134 among running backs, and No. 270 among recruits coming out of the state of Texas in that cycle.

Thankfully for Sarkisian, he still has the two main backs in the plans for the 2024 season. CJ Baxter and Jaydon Blue are set to be the main guys for the Longhorns and there is palpable excitement after spring practice surrounding them.

Baxter was the season opener starter last season as a true freshman before Jonathon Brooks — now off to the NFL — took over the role. Still, Baxter featured plenty and rushed for 659 yards and five touchdowns on 138 carries. A nice sophomore campaign is expected from Baxter.

Blue’s versatility out of the backfield is impressive. During the Texas spring game on Saturday, quarterback Arch Manning connected with the running back for a touchdown, adding to the hype. Blue is expected to provide chunk plays by breaking off some big runs for the program all season.
