Sir Alex Ferguson offered lot of ‘advice’ to one manager he held in high regard, Man Utd legend was ‘like a mentor’

Iconic former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson was a key influence in one manager’s career and provided invaluable advice when he was contacted by him.

Sir Alex Ferguson bowed out of football management in 2013 after he led Manchester United to their last Premier League title.

The 82-year-old Scotsman hoovered up the silverware during his legendary managerial career in Scotland with Aberdeen and with United in England.

Ferguson, who is widely considered one of the best managers of all time, lifted 13 Premier League titles and two Champions Leagues during his time with United.

The legendary former United boss was also the first manager to lead an English club to a continental treble after the Red Devils completed the famous feat in 1999.

Ferguson has been an invaluable source of information for both experienced and up-and-coming managers, who have sought out the advice of the United legend.

Football managers, both and present, have openly spoken about the incredible help that the iconic Scot has offered them when they have contacted him.

Ferguson’s influence on one manager

Sir Alex Ferguson hand-picked David Moyes to succeed him as Manchester United manager at the end of the 2012-13 Premier League season.

However, David Moyes endured an ill-fated spell at Old Trafford and the Scotsman was axed from the Red Devils after only 10 months in charge.

The 61-year-old former United boss bounced back from his setback at Old Trafford and went on to manage the likes of Real Sociedad, Sunderland and West Ham.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Moyes revealed that Ferguson was one of two people whose advice he would regularly seek out in his career.

The former Everton and United manager, who left West Ham this summer, admitted that fellow Scotsman Ferguson was a “mentor” for him.

“The truth is, I used to go Alex quite a lot for advice – Alex and Walter Smith,” Moyes said.

“Over my career, I’d been getting offered loads of jobs, and I’d go to Alex and ask him what he thought.

“Years ago, I got offered the Sheffield Wednesday job, and different jobs. And I would go to Alex and he’d say, ‘You can’t do that because of him, him and him. He was like a mentor.”

Moyes talks Ferguson’s position on one club

Moyes has previously admitted that he spoke with Ferguson earlier in his career and the Aberdeen legend urged him to snub one club.

The former Everton boss had been at Preston North End and met with Ferguson, who told him that Sheffield Wednesday would not be the best fit for him.

“I met Southampton and I met Nottingham Forest. There were other [clubs] at the time that were interested,” he told the Coaches’ Voice in 2019.

“I met Sheffield Wednesday and thought, ‘Should I, shouldn’t I?’ I remember I phoned Sir Alex and asked if I could see him.

“Sir Alex was so knowledgeable. He went through all the players and said to me, ‘No, David, I don’t think it’s that good a job.’”
