On Thursday morning, FootballScoop’s John Brice reported that Wisconsin was “targeting” Notre Dame recruiting staffer Carter Auman to become its director of player personnel.
But by the afternoon, Brice reported that the Irish “appears poised” to keep Auman in their football program. Blue & Gold can confirm that report and add that Auman is confirmed to be staying at Notre Dame and earned a promotion in the process. Auman is now the assistant to the general manager for the Fighting Irish, and that GM role is held by Chad Bowden.
While attending school at Notre Dame, Auman served as the “student head quarterback manager,” and after graduating in May 2022, he joined Bowden’s recruiting office as a recruiting associate. He’s been a key part of the recruiting office since; Auman has stepped up with a couple others departing for other schools in the offseason.
During the winter, Gerad Parker took Caleb Davis with him to Troy. Davis is the Trojans’ director of player personnel. And Dre Brown left for Illinois — his alma mater — a few weeks ago. Brown was more or less Bowden’s No. 2 in the recruiting office for a couple years, and that seems to be Auman’s role now.
It should also be noted that Michigan tried to poach Bowden this offseason, but the longtime right hand man of Marcus Freeman spurned the Wolverines to stay with the Fighting Irish.
As a Notre Dame alum, Auman is able to sell the Fighting Irish football program with passion from his own experience as a student there. And recruits love him.
“He reminds me of my big brother,” said 2026 four-star linebacker Tank King about Auman following a spring visit. “He was with us the entire trip, he showed us around campus and joked with us. He is down to earth, and he blew me away about how he got to ND, how it is a tradition for his family and it was the best decision he has ever made.
“He is someone that no matter where I go play at on the next level — I will always stay in touch with him. We bonded, and his friendship means a lot. I’m glad for that.”
Notre Dame currently has 21 commitments in the 2025 class, a group that currently ranks No. 6 in the country per the Industry Ranking Football Team Recruiting Rankings.
