Report: Leicester City boss Steve Cooper set to raid Norwich City for backroom appointment

Steve Cooper is looking to bolster his Leicester City backroom staff ahead of the Premier League season.

Steve Cooper was just appointed Leicester City manager on Thursday, signing a three-year contract with the Foxes following the departure of Enzo Maresca to Chelsea.

With experience managing Nottingham Forest, and a successful spell in the Championship with Swansea City, Cooper was given the job of overseeing Leicester for their return to the Premier League.

The former Forest boss has been given a mixed reception from Leicester City fans, however it’s clear the Englishman is looking to stamp his authority on his side early on with some fresh changes.

Maresca’s move to Chelsea saw the Italian bring all six members of his background staff to the London giants, leaving Cooper with an opportunity to gamble on a new set-piece coach from a Championship club.

Norwich City set-piece coach Andrew Hughes wanted by Leicester City

Norwich City set-piece coach Andrew Hughes has attracted admirers from Premier League clubs, per Daily Mail, including both Leicester City and Brentford.

Hughes has reportedly been swayed to the East Midlands after being impressed by Cooper’s plans, and Leicester’s training facilities.

The 46-year-old coach has a wealth of experience in English football, including a notable few months with Alan Pardew at Crystal Palace where the Eagles reached an FA Cup final.

Cooper has highlighted dead-ball situations as a field of improvement for Leicester ahead of the 2024/25 Premier League season.

Why a new set-piece coach will be crucial for Leicester City

Previous Premier League seasons have seen Leicester perform poorly from dead-ball situations, leading Cooper to take action and implement tactics early on in the campaign.

At many times during the 2022/23 Premier League season, they were masters of their own downfall as many defensive set-piece mistakes pushed the Foxes into relegation.

With a physical side, including the likes of Wout Faes and Jannik Vestergaard, Cooper has the players to turn Leicester into a real threat from attacking set-pieces, but also ensuring they ship less goals this campaign from corners and free-kicks.

Hughes will most certainly be instrumental in getting the best out of these players, as was seen from his time assisting David Wagner at Norwich City.

With this addition looking likely to take place just one day into his reign, it is expected that Cooper will make further changes in the coming days to mould his coaching staff ready for the new campaign.
