Artist Post Malone is trying to top the charts once again this year with his newly released song ‘Pour Me A Drink’ featuring country star Blake Shelton. The rapper/budding country singer croons about needing a drink and a smoke after a hard week, which in the first two lines describes his favorite NFL team – the Dallas Cowboys – dropping “another” game in overtime. It’s a brutal shot at the team that frequently uses Malone as part of their promotional efforts – including in this year’s schedule reveal video.

“40 hours got me goin’ out my mind, Dallas dropped another game in overtime,” the song begins with Post Malone singing. “Caught a ticket down on 65, I know where I’m goin’.”

“Guess I really went and messed it up again, now my baby’s goner than the Tulsa wind,” Shelton continues. “Judging by the stone-cold sober state I’m in, need to crack one wide open.”

The chorus also mentions the “Jones'” though the duo could just be referencing the common idiom.

“Somebody pour me a drink, somebody bum me a smoke,” Malone says. “I’m bout to get on a buzz, I’m bout to get on a roll. I’ve been breaking my back, keeping up with the Jones’, y’all know what I mean, and y’all know how it goes.”

Malone uses Cowboys for lyrical inspiration

As an artist, Post Malone has a history of dropping Cowboys references in his work – though it’s usually in a more favorable way. In ‘Wow.’, a hit song on his 2019 album Hollywood’s Bleeding, the rapper says, “Used to have a lot, but I got more now, made another hit ’cause I got bored now. Always goin’ for it, never punt fourth down. Last call, Hail Mary, Prescott touchdown.”

In that scenario, it sounds like Dak Prescott‘s actually winning the game in overtime. The Cowboys have lost three out of four games in overtime in the last three seasons.

Malone has been using the Cowboys for inspiration for years. On his second album in 2018, beerbongs & bentleys, he used former Dallas quarterback Tony Romo as a stand-in for a 9mm reference.

Despite the shot at the team, in the music video for ‘Pour Me A Drink,’ Malone is sporting a No. 88 CeeDee Lamb jersey. Not only a Cowboys fan, he has also frequently worn Dallas Mavericks gear at shows.
