Fabrizio Romano says Aston Villa now expect to complete deal for 'exceptional' target by end of week

Aston Villa have been busy on the transfer front over the past few weeks ahead of a huge 2024/25 campaign.

The Villans finished fourth in the Premier League to qualify for the Champions League, and they will need to strengthen to ensure they can handle the extra workload.

Villa have been spinning several plates of late. They are in discussions with Everton and Juventus over deals that could see both incomings at B6 and outgoings.

The Villans have also been in talks with Chelsea over Ian Maatsen, and this is a deal that seems to be on the right track.

Indeed, Fabrizio Romano has now provided an update on the state of play involving Villa, the Blues, and the Netherlands international.

Aston Villa expect to agree personal terms with Ian Maatsen by end of week

Romano, taking to X, reported that Villa are expected to complete an agreement on personal terms for Maatsen by the end of the week.

Negotiations are underway over a six-year deal and progressing well after Villa agreed a £37.5million fee with Chelsea, added the transfer insider.

Maatsen an ideal signing for Champions League-bound Aston Villa

Ian Maatsen made a real name for himself on loan at Borussia Dortmund in the second half of last season.

His efforts helped the Bundesliga side reach the Champions League final last term.

However, Dortmund seems to be unable to meet the financial requirements set by Chelsea with regards to a deal for the defender.

With that in mind, Villa are now set to be the beneficiaries in signing an ‘exceptional‘ talent who already has good Premier League and Champions League experience.

At just 22 years of age, Maatsen is still nowhere near his prime and should get a lot better in the coming years.
