Canadian player suffers online racist abuse at Copa America

Canada defender Moise Bombito has been the target of racist abuse online after a 2-0 defeat against world champions Argentina in the opening match of the Copa America.

Bombito tackled Albiceleste captain Lionel Messi in the first half of Thursday's match in Atlanta.

Without giving a name, the Canadian FA said on X that it "is aware of and deeply disturbed by racist comments made online and directed at one of our men’s national team players following tonight's game.

“We are in communication with CONCACAF and CONMEBOL about this matter,” it added, referring to the two confederations on the American continent.

Bombito said in his Instagram story: "My beautiful Canada. No room for that bs." It was not fully clear if this referred to the abuse.

Playing in a tournament record 35th Copa match, Messi was able to continue and set up Lautaro Martinez for the final score in the 88th, after Julián Álvarez had scored the opener. The Copa in the United States runs until July 14.
