Reports: River Seine still not clean enough for Olympic events

The water quality of the River Seine in Paris is still not good enough for the Olympic competitions planned there, according to tests reported by French media on Friday.

Reports said the prefect of the capital region, Marc Guillaume, had stated that the samples from the river have not yet met the necessary standards. The Paris Olympics run July 26-August 11.

One of the reasons for the failed tests is the heavy rainfall in recent weeks. This had led to an increased concentration of faecal bacteria, according to the authorities.

However, Guillaume is confident that the levels could still improve by the start of the Games, reports said.

The triathlon and open water competitions are due to take place in the Seine and part of the opening ceremony is also expected to be celebrated on the river.

Swimming has been banned in the Seine for almost a hundred years.

The city has invested €1.4 billion ($1.5 billion) in the run-up to the Games to improve the water quality.

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo and French President Emmanuel Macron had both announced their intention to swim in the Seine before the Games.
