Jaylen Brown woke up in a trolling mood Friday and decided to take aim at ESPN‘s Stephen A. Smith during the Boston Celtics’ championship parade.
Last month on “First Take,” Smith claimed that an NBA source told him that Brown wasn’t “as marketable as he should be.”
“I wanted to read to y’all what an NBA source just sent me,” Smith said. “He said, ‘Jaylen Brown, it’s not so much that he’s underrated, it’s that he’s just not liked because of his I-am-better-than-you attitude. He knows it. It’s the same reason he is not as marketable as he should be.’ That’s what an NBA source just sent me.”
Brown still wants to know who Smith’s source is and is encouraging him to reveal it. He showed up to the parade wearing a shirt which reads, “State Your Source.”
Brown ultimately got the last laugh on Monday when the Celtics hoisted their record 18th Larry O’Brien Trophy. Brown was named the Bill Russell NBA Finals MVP after the Celtics defeated the Dallas Mavericks, 106-88, in Game 5.

Brown capped off his stellar series with a 21-point, eight-rebound, six-assist performance in Game 5 to close out the series. Through the five games, Brown posted averages of 20.8 points, 5.4 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game. Brown’s best came in the Game 3 victory, when he tallied 30 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. The three-time All-Star was passed up for the All-NBA team this season, but now has a Finals MVP on his résumé.
Brown led the Celtics on one of the most dominant postseason runs of all-time, as the Celtics went 16-3 including 8-1 in the conference championship and NBA Finals. But Brown didn’t do it alone. He certainly had help from players such as Jrue Holiday, Derrick White, Kristaps Porzingis and of course, Jayson Tatum.
“My teammates were great,” Brown said. “They allowed me to lead us on both ends of ball, and we just came out and performed on our home floor. It’s just amazing. You know, it [MVP] could have gone to anybody. It could have gone to Jayson. Jayson, like I can’t talk enough about his selflessness. You know, I can’t talk enough about his attitude. It’s just how he approached not just this series or the Finals but just the playoffs in general. And we did it together as a team, and that was the most important thing.”
