Lexi Winters and I met in the parking lot at White Knoll High School on Friday morning. We walked down the stairs to the softball stadium she played in from the time she was in middle school, you can find her face in a 2018 5A State Champion team photo that hangs on the dugout.
Winters reflected on her time at White Knoll, the place that shaped her as a catcher and prepared her for her next step. Lexi’s college career began with the Charlotte 49ers. She started and played in 100 games as a 49er, and was named the AAC Defensive Player of the Year.
The University of South Carolina named Ashley Chastain, the former 49ers coach, the new South Carolina Softball coach last week. The possibility that Winters would follow her coach to her dream school was becoming real. Last Saturday she got the call, and committed to the Gamecocks.
We made our way from White Knoll to Beckham Field to finish our shoot. This is Winters’ new home. Her dream is now a reality.
