Barcelona’s Ilkay Gundogan says Liverpool have a player who’s better than Neymar and Harry Kane

Liverpool have some real quality within the squad as they look to begin the Arne Slot era in style.

It isn’t going to be easy for Slot to replicate the success that former manager Jurgen Klopp brought to the Reds.

However, the Liverpool squad is jam-packed full of talent. From goalkeeper Alisson Becker right through to Darwin Nunez up front, Slot has the basis of something fantastic.

Perhaps the most exciting area of this group of players is the forward line. Liverpool have five terrific options to pick from, all of whom have different qualities.

And although the Reds are reportedly in the market for a new attacker, Barcelona midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has suggested that they already have one of the very best around.

Ilkay Gundogan makes Mohamed Salah claim

Gundogan has certainly had his fair share of battles with Liverpool over the years. The 32-year-old was a key man in the Man City team who the Reds fought so epically under Klopp.

As a result, he’s well placed to comment on just how good certain Liverpool players are.

Gundogan is also a former player of Klopp’s at Borussia Dortmund and as a result has often spoken well about Liverpool. That continued when the German national team captain was asked to rate players by John Nellis on TikTok.

There is seemingly no rhyme or reason to Nellis’ questions. He is not asking to rank forwards, or wingers or anything, simply to pick between how good certain top players of the current generation are.

With Neymar on the stand having beaten off Vinicius Jnr, Gundogan is asked to pick between the Barcelona legend and Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah.

“Woah!” says the midfielder. “Let me go Salah.” Harry Kane is next to face Salah, with Gundogan opting for the Egyptian again.

But with Salah then head-to-head with Gundogan’s former Man City teammate Kevin De Bruyne, Mo comes unstuck.

“You’ve put me on the spot here!” smiles the German. “I’ll go with Kevin, Kevin De Bruyne,” he says.

What’s the latest on Mohamed Salah’s future?

Gundogan’s admission once again just goes to show how highly rated Salah is by his fellow professionals.

The Egyptian King is truly one of the best players in Liverpool’s history and is an all-time footballing great.

There is some debate surrounding whether it is time for the Reds to cash in on Salah, though. With his contract coming up to the final year, interest from Saudi Arabia is still there.

For the time being, the most likely scenario seems to be that Salah stays put and possibly sees his contract out at Liverpool.

There has been no talk of a new deal being offered for the £34m man and all is quiet in terms of approaches from elsewhere.

For whatever time we’ve got left to enjoy him, let’s remember that we’re watching one of the best to ever do it.
