Quinn Ewers could have left for the NFL Draft but decided to stay in Austin for one more season. Not just because there was some more work to be done, hopefully increasing his stock in 2024. But Ewers enjoys being the starting quarterback at Texas.
It’s something he has dreamed of his whole life and is now living through it. Ewers gets to work under head coach Steve Sarkisian and lead one of the more explosive offenses in college football. Not too bad of a gig for a guy originally from the Lone Star State.
“It means everything,” Ewers told Robert Griffin III on RG3 and The Ones. “Sometimes, I got to take a step back and take it all in. This is what I always wanted to do, this is where I always wanted to be. To have Sark trust me to run his offense and have my teammates trust me — it’s a pretty cool experience.”
Ewers’ college football journey will end at Texas but it certainly did not start there. He was once committed to the Longhorns when Tom Herman was the head coach. However, Ewers decided to decommit and verbally pledge to Ryan Day and the Ohio State Buckeyes.
When NIL was introduced across college football, Ewers decided to skip his senior season at Southlake Carroll High School and enroll early at Ohio State. He arrived on campus right before fall practice, barely getting settled in before the season began.
Just a few months later, Ewers was in the NCAA transfer portal looking for a new home. Texas was his landing spot, fulfilling the goal he set out from being a kid.
The whole process of finally getting to Austin seemingly went in a blur, as did the first season with Sarkisian. Ewers admitted he wanted to stay for the 2024 season to have a chance to breathe and not rush his process.
“I feel like I’ve been rushing my entire life,” Ewers said back in March. “Just take a year, slow down, and not rush things. I skipped my senior year, that went by fast. I was at Ohio State for a semester or so, that all went by fast also. Just take my time throughout the whole process, enjoy being here. Being present and not looking too far forward.”
Ewers has already accomplished a lot while wearing burnt orange. Texas won its first conference championship since 2009 this past season, earning a spot in the College Football Playoff as well. Now, there is a ton of hype heading into the SEC where Ewers projects to be a Heisman Trophy favorite.
Through the summer and this upcoming season, Ewers understands how special the position he’s in is. Enjoying the moments as they go by is critical for him.
