Martin Truex Jr. discusses potential NASCAR Cup races for 2025, driving for 23XI, Denny Hamlin

He won’t be a full-time fixture around NASCAR in 2025, but Martin Truex Jr. might not be gone entirely from the pit lanes after his retirement from full-time racing at the end of the 2024 season. It’s a possibility Truex has already hinted at.

Truex said this weekend at New Hampshire that a potential return to run in a select few races in 2025 could be on the table. If it happens, Truex would likely do so racing with 23XI.

23XI is co-owned by Denny Hamlin, who is currently a teammate of Truex’ at Joe Gibbs Racing. Hamlin has indicated the drive is available for Truex in 2025 for the Daytona 500, among other races, if he wants it.

“We just kind of started talking because he threw it out there in the media center and we’ve chatted a few times this week,” Truex said about discussions with Hamlin, according to NBC Sports. “A few things to figure out, but it seems like we will be able to do some races if we want, which will be awesome. Excited about that. It is really cool that Denny did that and reached out this week. It means a lot to me.”

Truex also discussed the possibility to running again at New Hampshire in 2025.

“Yeah, probably,” Truex said. “We will see. I haven’t really looked into all of that and started the scheduling process. I’m just kind of focused on what we are doing here, but eventually, we will figure it out and it is definitely a place I would like to come back to.”

More on Truex retiring

At Iowa Speedway, Martin Truex Jr. spoke to the media about the retirement decision. For the last few years, he has been asked countless times if he is going to retire. In each of the last three seasons, he has decided to come back. Until now.

Truex spoke candidly about the choice to finally go.

“Just felt like the right time for me,” Truex said in his press conference. “Honestly, I’ve thought about it a lot the past few seasons and just waited for that feeling in my mind to be positive. Like, this is, okay I’m good, I want to do something else. Yeah, something just felt different this year for me I felt like it was time to slow down and do something else. It’s been a great ride, though, obviously.”

Martin Truex Jr. said that this year’s struggles on the track did not play a factor in his decision. He also noted that he has known for a few weeks that he was going to retire. This also doesn’t mean he’s done racing completely.

Both Truex and Joe Gibbs were sure to mention that the driver was done racing “full-time.” Let’s not forget that Aric Almirola has raced a handful of times for Gibbs in the Xfinity Series. Could we see Truex go back to the series where he won two championships?
