The proportion of German cyclists wearing helmets rose to 44% in 2023, up from 40% the year before, according to a study compiled by the federal road transport authority (BASt) and published on Sunday.

The rise continued a trend, the BASt, based in Bergisch Gladbach to the east of Cologne, said. In 2020, barely a quarter of cyclists wore helmets, and in 2010, the figure was just 9%. The authority did not suggest a reason for the increase.

The survey is based on observations conducted in the same six regions ever year with the aim of arriving at a standardized assessment.

The observations in 2023 took in 17,700 cyclists, including 5,400 on electric cycles. While 65% of electric cyclists wore helmets, just 35% of unassisted riders did so.
