Storms cause injuries and damage in Poland

Three people were reported injured by storms in Poland over the weekend, a spokesman told news broadcaster TVN24 on Sunday.

The emergency services had been called out almost 2,200 times on Saturday to deal with flooded roads and basements, and falling trees had cut power lines, blocked roads and damaged roofs, he said.

Around 20,000 households were temporarily without power.

A branch torn off a tree by the storm fell on a kayak in which two people were paddling on the Wieprz river near Zwierzyniec in south-eastern Poland. A 55-year-old woman was injured and taken to hospital.

The storm blew over a number of yachts during a regatta on Lake Solina, an artificial lake also in the south-east.

Several dozen people had to be rescued from the water, broadcaster TVP Info reported, with one of those rescued taken to hospital. Four rescue boats had to be deployed by the emergency services.

A man was injured by a wooden beam in the same region as he was attempting to secure his house against the storm.
