‘Massive fan’: Wayne Rooney says Liverpool have a player who can do one thing better than anyone else

Liverpool are one of the most well-represented Premier League clubs at Euro 2024, with 10 players at the tournament.

They will all be chasing glory with their respective nations, with new Reds manager Arne Slot perhaps simply wanting them to avoid injury.

The Dutchman will want all of his squad back and fit as soon as possible, with the new season not exactly a million miles away.

He will be working hard behind the scenes in order to get things spot on before the first ball is kicked, having just been unveiled by Liverpool.

But Slot already knows many of the players well, having been watching a lot of videos of his new side in recent weeks.

Wayne Rooney shares Trent Alexander-Arnold verdict for England

Plenty of big decisions will need to be made by Slot in the weeks and months to come, one of which will undoubtedly involve Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The right-back has been used in midfield for England at Euro 2024, despite spending the majority of his career in the former role.

Former Three Lions striker Wayne Rooney has now given his thoughts on the matter after the matches against Serbia and Denmark.

“Trent? I’m a massive fan but playing from the right,” Rooney told The Times. “I don’t think there’s anyone on the pitch who can do what he can with the ball but his best passes are balls in behind and he has had no one to play those to.

“He has never been the best defensively, and as I said before the tournament, if you keep him in midfield there will come a point where we get punished in there by the better, more savvy teams.

“So far, England have just been lucky that hasn’t happened.”

Will Gareth Southgate’s experiment with the Liverpool star continue?

Southgate now has a huge decision to make on Alexander-Arnold, having started the Liverpool man in midfield in the opening two matches.

England beat Serbia 1-0 and drew 1-1 with Denmark in those two matches, leaving them top of Group C with one match left.

That match comes against Slovenia, with first place in the standings still undecided after they drew their first two games.

Denmark meanwhile are also on two points after two draws, with Serbia rock bottom of the group on one point.

Southgate is certain to tweak his time after the disappointing start to Euro 2024, with Alexander-Arnold potentially dropping out of the side.

He played almost 70 minutes against Serbia and just over 50 against Denmark, and was replaced by Conor Gallagher on both occasions.

His new club manager Slot will undoubtedly be paying close attention to the situation, with the Dutchman needing to decide how he can get the best out of Alexander-Arnold.

Slot has time to consider his options, but former England striker Gary Lineker is already convinced that Liverpool should be playing him in midfield next season.
