Nebraska appears in a position to add running back Mekhi Nelson 2024 roster

Nebraska continues to add to its 2024 roster. St. Thomas More Prep School (Oakdale, Conn.) head coach Ernest Anderson confirmed to HuskerOnline on Sunday that running back Mekhi Nelson is in Lincoln and has already begun his Husker journey.

The 6-foot, 190-pound Nelson planned to reclassify to the class of 2025 after a successful career at Wilkes Barre (Penn.) High School.

He never ended up playing a down of football for St. Thomas More. Nebraska began recruiting him heavily in early May of his senior year of high school.

Nelson then worked out for NU at camp on June 6 and officially visited Lincoln on June 18.

He’s now on campus and listed as a student at the University of Nebraska. Nelson has yet to confirm that he has joined the Husker football team, but he has said he plans to make a public announcement of his plans on Monday.

Running backs coachEJ Barthel has a long-standing relationship with Nelson since he was the running backs coach at Connecticut.

“I have a very strong relationship with coach Barthel that we’ve been building for over two years,” Nelson said in a previous interview. “He’s always shown me genuine love and always keeps it real which separates him from a lot of people and that means a whole lot to me.

“He’s treated me like a high-priority recruit since day one! It was huge having him offer me at Nebraska; it showed me that I’m a testament to putting my head down and grinding, and now seeing that all my hard work is finally paying off.”

Nelson gives Nebraska a 2024 running back

The Huskers never replaced running back Kewan Lacy in their 2024 class when he de-committed and signed with Missouri.

They did add Oregon transfer Dante Dowdell from the transfer portal as a four-to-play-three running back addition.

Nelson put up big numbers, particularly as a junior in high school, when he had 1,824 yards, 212 carries (8.6 yards per carry), and 25 touchdowns.

“I would describe myself as a dawg,” Nelson said. “Because I can run the ball like a running back but also can line up outside or in the slot and route up your favorite corner or linebacker on any given occasion.

“I have the speed to take it to the house, and the strength to break off defenders tackles. I feel like I bring a whole lot of versatility to the team and the offense.”

Nelson would be the 45th true freshman NU has added to its 2024 roster and he would immediately join the team in summer workouts.
