11 passes completed in 90 minutes... Manchester United star has Euro 2024 nightmare

Manchester United have a player heading home already after early elimination from Euro 2024.

When Euro 2024 began 10 days ago, Manchester United had eight players at the competition in Germany.

The number has now been reduced to seven, and quite predictably it is Scotland and Scott McTominay who have been eliminated first.

Scotland lost their final game 1-0 to Hungary, following a 1-1 draw with Switzerland and 5-1 hammering by Germany, finishing bottom of the group.

Scott McTominay struggles

Scott McTominay toiled as Scotland were undone by a winner from Hungary in the 10th minute of injury time.

Scotland had surged forward themselves looking for a winner but lacked a cutting edge, even though there was hope McTominay might provide it.

The Manchester United midfielder was deployed in an attacking midfield role, but struggled to have any impact on the game at all.

McTominay had fewer touches (34) than any outfield player who featured from start to finish.

In doing so he completed a paltry 11 passes from just 15 attempts.

This might have been tolerable if he was providing a goal threat – but he simply wasn’t.

McTominay failed to attempt a single shot at the Hungary goal, while his Scotland team landed a total of just four shots, and none on target.

McTominay will be back at Manchester United early

Scott McTominay will now head off on a break with his 2023/24 season officially over.

Manchester United’s first pre-season game takes place on July 15, and McTominay should be available for selection.

He will certainly be raring and ready to go when United head out on tour to USA later in the month.

What his future holds at Old Trafford is up to manager Erik ten Hag – but this latest Scotland match highlighted his limitations.

McTominay can be a useful squad player, who chips in with goals, 10 last season. But there are also games where he can end up looking totally lost.
