A major fire at a battery factory in South Korea has resulted in the death of at least one worker, local media reported on Monday.

The fire brigade suspected that at least 19 people were trapped by the fire in the multi-storey factory building in the city of Hwaseong, south of the capital Seoul, according to South Korean news agency Yonhap.

The condition of the individuals remains unclear and the rescue services are working to reach them.

Several people were injured, according to the reports.

South Korean television showed flames and thick clouds of smoke billowing out of the building after a fire broke out in the morning for reasons that are not yet known.
