'Frustrating': What Scottish media said about Southampton star Che Adams after Scotland exited Euro 2024

Scotland lost their crucial third Euro 2024 group game to Hungary on Sunday night which saw them crash out of the competition.

Hungary went into the game knowing their only chance of progression to the round of 16 was a win.

Scotland and could be almost certain only a win would be enough for them, given two points is unlikely to be enough to qualify as one of the six best third-place teams.

Che Adams led the line for Scotland for third consecutive game, whilst Stuart Armstrong made his first appearance of the tournament off the bench.

Both Adams and Armstrong see their Southampton contracts expire at the end of June, with Armstrong confirmed to be moving on whilst Adams is still in negotiations over a potential new deal.

Both were powerless as Scotland exited Euro 2024, though, with Hungary scoring an 100th-minute winner with both sides chasing the game.

Che Adams fails to impress in Scotland defeat to Hungary

Adams has had a tough time at this Euros, with speculation swirling around his future unlikely to have helped.

The 27-year-old has cut an isolated figure for much of Scotland’s three group games, particularly as he was left chasing shadows in the 5-1 defeat to Germany on the opening day.

It was again difficult for Adams against Hungary, with Scotland’s superior possession not helping them create any chances for their striker.

Scottish media were left somewhat disappointed by what they saw from the man chosen to lead the Scotland line, with The Scotsman and Edinburgh Evening News scoring his performances a five out of ten and The Herald giving him a six.

In their assessment of Adams’ display, The Herald commented: ‘Struggled to create at the top end of the pitch, but was once more starved of service.

Committed two careless first half fouls in dangerous positions, however Hungary failed to capitalise. Energetic as ever, but too often with no results.’

The Scotsman summarised the striker’s performance by saying: ‘Forced to feed off scraps during a frustrating first half. Had one shot over the bar at start of the second period but this was not his night.’

The Edinburgh Evening News simply added: ‘Tireless running but constantly chasing the game’.

Despite their contract situations, Adams and Armstrong are still currently Southampton players and represent two of just three Saints representatives at the tournament.

The third is Jan Bednarek of Poland, who has started both of his country’s games in so far.

Unfortunately for those with a Southampton interest, all three players will exit the tournament at the group stage.

Bednarek’s Poland have lost both of their games in a tough group alongside Netherlands, Austria and France and other results saw them the first team confirmed to be eliminated from the Euros despite still having their final game against France to play.

With Scotland crashing out against Hungary, it has been a disappointing summer for the Southampton trio.
