German hiker found dead on Greek island of Crete

A 67-year-old German tourist has died on Crete after setting off on an hour-long hike and presumably straying from the path.

The man had set off on Sunday morning from the village of Omalos on a plateau in the regional district of Chania, as the Greek news channel ERT reported on Monday, citing the authorities.

His destination was the fishing village of Sougia, more than 30 kilometres away.

His wife is said to have reported him missing on Sunday afternoon. According to media reports, the man had previously called her and stated that he was not well.

The rescue services asked the hiker to call the emergency number 112 so that they could locate his cell phone.

His body was located and recovered early on Monday morning by helicopter in the rocky, difficult-to-access gorge of Tripiti.

The authorities assume that he lost his bearings and took a wrong turn. He had walked dozens of kilometres from the starting point of the hike to where he was found.

It is the sixth death in connection with tourist hikes in Greece in the month of June alone. Three more people have been missing for over a week after setting off on hikes.

Authorities and locals have tried to warn tourists against underestimating the intense heat in Greece, especially during the midday hours.

Temperatures so far this June have been the highest in Greece this year since records began, sometimes exceeding 40 degrees.
