Cavendish nominated for Tour de France where he seeks stage record

Mark Cavendish is part of the Astana team for the upcoming Tour de France where the veteran Briton may make his final attempt to gain sole possession of the stage win record.

The team was announced on Monday. Sprinter Cavendish is tied with Belgian legend Eddy Merckx on 34 stage wins at the famous three-week race.

He achieved them between 2009 and 2021 and will face a uphill battle to return to the top this year. The biggest rival is Belgian Jasper Philipsen, who won four stages last year.

The 111th Tour starts on Saturday on Florence and ends on July 21 in Nice.
