Report: Regis Le Bris now set to make one big change to his tactics at Sunderland following Lorient spell

Sunderland are scheduled to return to pre-season before the end of the month.

The squad will return to the Academy of Light to work under their fourth manager in 12 months, with Regis Le Bris set to replace interim coach Mike Dodds.

The Frenchman arrives after enduring relegation with Lorient last season, but the club remain confident that he is the right man to take Sunderland forward.

With very little known about Le Bris, Black Cats fans have been doing their own digging into his style of play and record in Ligue 1.

Having spent most of his time with Lorient adopting a 3-5-2 formation, many supporters were expecting the same to be done on Wearside.

Dodds attempted similar tactics during his stint in charge, but the success he saw against Leeds United and West Brom was short-lived.

Le Bris is unlikely to play the 3-5-2 he adopted at Lorient

Despite playing three at the back with Lorient, it has now been reported that he is likely to prefer a back four following his arrival at Sunderland.

According to the Sunderland Echo, Le Bris faoured a more possession-bashed approach during his time in their academy, while the club are eager to see him play a back four in order to bring in another attacker.

The report claims the 48-year-old will be ‘flexible depending on the opponent’, but will mainly focus on an attacking approach.

Sunderland need to sign the right players for his ‘attacking approach’

It is a very promising approach from Le Bris, with the 3-5-2 proving particularly boring and underwhelming in the final weeks of the previous campaign.

While they looked more solid at the back, Sunderland’s lack of creative players on the pitch made scoring goals extremely hard.

It is all well and good if Le Bris aims for attacking tactics, but he will need to be backed with the players to do so.

We can expect Jack Clarke to leave the Stadium of Light, and the club will desperately need to bring in more goalscorers and pace to the squad this summer.

One player we can expect to play a key role is Dan Neil, with the midfielder showing many similar traits to one of Le Bris’ biggest stars at Lorient – Enzo Le Fee.
