Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected midweek in Brussels, EU officials told dpa on Monday, as several initiatives involving the European Union's relationship with the war-torn country get underway.

Zelensky is expected to visit as a security agreement between the EU and Ukraine is concluded after months of talks to hammer out the pact.

Ukraine has already agreed similar bilateral arrangements with EU countries like Germany and France.

The United States and Ukraine signed their long-term security agreement at a G7 summit in Italy.

Accord stems from earlier NATO talks

The security agreement goes back to a decision by NATO heads of state and government at a summit in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius in July.

It was agreed there that the individual NATO allies would conclude bilateral agreements to ensure Ukraine's long-term security.

The agreements ensure that Ukraine will receive arms supplies and financial aid to help bridge the gap until the country's intended accession to NATO.

EU set to name new leaders

The Ukrainian president's visit also comes as EU leaders gather in Brussels for a summit on Thursday and Friday to select the new leadership of the bloc's institutions.

The expected timing of Zelensky's visit alongside the summit would allow him to attend as a guest, however no official confirmation was available.

The visit would also come after the first session of official entry negotiations took place between Ukraine and the EU.

Zelensky welcomed the first negotiation session as a "truly historic" moment for his country. "Ukraine is and will always be part of a united Europe," he said in a post on X before the membership talks.

For security reasons given the Russian invasion, Zelensky's travel plans are rarely announced in advance.
