Report: Red Bull set to take unprecedented ‘major update’ step next month due to McLaren and Ferrari threat

Red Bull Racing could once again celebrate standing on the top step of the podium at the Spanish Grand Prix.

It was their seventh Grand Prix victory of the season, with every race win coming courtesy of Max Verstappen thus far.

However, it’s been far from plain sailing for the Austrian outfit who arguably were once again not the quickest car on the grid in Barcelona.

Instead, they have been heavily reliant on Verstappen and his individual brilliance, with the gap to Sergio Perez highlighting just how difficult the car is to drive right now.

A report from the Dutch outlet Telegraaf.nl suggests that despite entering one of the busiest periods of the season now, Red Bull are set to make an unprecedented step to try and recapture their dominance over the rest of the grid.

It sounds like the staff in the factory are going to be doing everything they can to try and help Verstappen win a fourth straight title and open up the gap in the Constructors’ Championship with McLaren and Ferrari looming.

Red Bull preparing an unprecedented major update before the Hungarian Grand Prix

The report from the Telegraaf points out that F1 is entering its busiest period of the season with four races in the next five weekends starting in Spain.

Verstappen took the victory in Barcelona although Perez’s will be concerning despite Christian Horner suggesting the Mexican should take confidence from his drive, via Instagram.

The Austrian Grand Prix and British Grand Prix are next up and while Red Bull are traditionally very strong at both circuits, they’re also personal favourites of their closest rival Lando Norris.

There’s then a weekend off before heading to the Hungarian Grand Prix and the approaching summer break, but Red Bull know they can’t slow down on their progress now.

The report goes on to say that Red Bull will continue their work at ‘full speed’ during the weekend off, with ‘many more employees than usual’ working over that period.

Red Bull’s staff are expected to continue working on new parts and want to deliver a ‘major update’ package before the summer package, meaning they can’t miss a day of work at this stage.

Can Sergio Perez close the gap to Max Verstappen?

Both Red Bull drivers could really benefit from a major update being delivered as quickly as possible.

However, as Ferrari and RB proved in Spain, there are risks involved with making big changes with neither team making the step forward they expected.

For Verstappen, he can see the progress the likes of Norris are making and he had to be at his very best to stop the Brit securing his second win of the season in Barcelona.

While he’s still the most obvious choice when predicting who will win the 2024 title, McLaren, Ferrari and Mercedes are potentially one big step away from taking that opportunity out of his hands despite his incredible talent.

Sergio Perez has had plenty of difficulties over the past few races and looks way off the pace of his closest rivals.

He complained about the balance of the car, via Planet F1, after another race where he finished a long way away from his teammate.

Perez finished second in the Drivers’ Championship in 2023 because Red Bull had such a large advantage over the rest of the field.

That’s now disappeared and Red Bull now need to work overtime to try and get Perez back into that position.
