Kingston (Ga.) Cass four-star quarterback Brodie McWhorteralways planned to commit before his junior season. That is because he wanted to help build the class at the school he would end up choosing and focus on his last two years of high school football.
Auburnand North Carolinawere previously the leaders for McWhorter, but West Virginiamade a big move for the 6-foot-1, 190-pound signal-caller during a visit for a spring practice. He liked how the Mountaineers’ coaches ran practice and held meetings. McWhorter returned to Morgantownon the weekend of June 15 and felt that West Virginia was “home,” so he committed to head coach Neal Brownand his staff before heading back to Georgia.
“If you asked me four or five months ago, I would have definitely not seen myself committing to West Virginia,” McWhorter told On3. “That’s how things have changed. It’s one of those things where you have to see it to believe it. Once you’re on campus, it’s different up there, from the facilities to the nutrition to the strength and conditioning program.”
West Virginia is ‘the right place’ for McWhorter
McWhorter is now the second member of the Mountaineers’ 2026 recruiting class and is ready to recruit playmakers to the Big 12 program. He also wants to help Brown “bring championships to Morgantown.”
West Virginia first got involved in McWhorter’s recruitment eight months ago thanks to quarterbacks coach Sean Reagan, who is now the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Troy. As soon as Reagan departed, new quarterbacks coach Tyler Allen contacted the No. 33 player in Georgia and since then, the Mountaineers continued to recruit him hard.
“I like the relationships I’ve built with the whole coaching staff, both on the offensive and defensive side of the ball, and coach Brown,” said McWhorter, the No. 314 overall prospect and No. 23 quarterback in the 2026 On3 Industry Ranking. “I’ve been told by people that they treat you like a top priority and when you get there, you’re going to feel like a top priority. Relationships have always been one of the main things in my process because it’ll be my family away from family in the years to come.
“Development matters too, as I don’t want to go to a school and not get developed as I should be developed. After sitting down with the strength coach and coach Allen and learning how I will get developed on and off the field, I knew that it would be the right place for me. I could see the progress and the history of coach Mike Joseph from the strength side and what coach Allen will do every day in the offseason to make sure I’m prepared.”
McWhorter is ready to help Brown keep West Virginia on an upward trajectory
Brown is heading into his sixth season at West Virginia. Last year, he led the Mountaineers to nine wins and a victory in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl.
McWhorter is excited to see where Brown continues to take the program. He played an important role in the four-star choosing West Virginia over Auburn, Clemson, Florida State, North Carolina and Ohio State.
“He’s the man,” McWhorter said. “I don’t think I’ve had as strong of a connection with any other head coach that I’ve met than coach Brown. He believed in me as soon as he saw the videos of me throwing and called me right away and said, ‘You’re our guy.’ My connection and bond with him has been since day one and I knew that they had a good shot because of that.”
The four-star has a long time until he can sign his National Letter of Intent. Yet McWhorter is already excited to play in front of West Virginia’s fans.
“The environment is different,” McWhorter said. “They have one of the best fanbases, in my opinion, in college football. Every time I step on campus, it’s a different feeling there. I can’t explain it. If you go into a restaurant, you’re going to see West Virginia fans and they’ll notice you.”
