'Fantastic player'... Serbia boss scared of Manchester United's Denmark star, says he hopes he starts on the bench

England and Denmark’s 1-1 draw at Euro 2024 last week probably left the Danes feeling better than Gareth Southgate’s side.

Yet, with two draws from two games, it is Denmark who are a little more desperate heading into the final group match.

Denmark face Serbia, who have one point so far. A win will book the Danes a place in the knockout phase.

Likewise, a win for Serbia would likely secure their spot in the last 16, meaning there is everything to play for.

Serbia boss scared of Christian Eriksen

Serbia manager Dragan Stojkovic spoke at his press conference ahead of the game and picked out the one Denmark player he is really worried about.

He named one of Manchester United’s two Danes, highlighting the quality of experienced midfielder Christian Eriksen.

Stojkovic was quoted by Bold, commenting: “Christian Eriksen is one of the players who has marked an era in the world of football. I am really happy that he is with us and that he is here and playing.

“But I would love to see him on the bench, because he is a fantastic player with a lot of intelligence.”

Stojkovic went on to add: “He is very precise in his game and he has a very powerful kick. If he starts, we have to take good care of him.

“Our players are prepared for what Denmark brings, but we have to keep him away from the field, where he can hurt us.”

Eriksen has created 11 chances in Denmark’s opening two games and is likely to be central of their chances of success against Serbia.

At international level he is a player who commands respect, but he might have to be a little wary against Serbia, if his opponents decide a physical approach is the best way to try and keep him quiet.

Rasmus Hojlund also looking for a goal

Stojkovic made no mention of Denmark’s other stars, including Eriksen’s Manchester United teammate Rasmus Hojlund.

The striker is searching for his first goal of the tournament, although, as his teammate Yussuf Poulsen pointed out, it is not like he has been missing chances either.

Hojlund scored seven goals in his first nine Denmark games, going on one of his dangerous scoring streaks.

But he’s now going through one of those frustrating spells, six international matches without a goal.

Getting a vital strike for Denmark against Serbia would be ideal to set him up for the knockout stages. He can hope to benefit from Eriksen, if the midfielder can escape the Serbian attempts to stop him.
