‘People are telling me’: One F1 team’s hopes of signing Adrian Newey have ‘rather diminished’ - Sky journalist

Adrian Newey’s future was a huge talking point earlier in the season and while he’s still not made a definitive choice on his next team, he’s got plenty of options.

Red Bull losing the storied designer is a huge blow to their prospects, especially with new regulations arriving in 2026 and the convergence of the grid this season ahead of the final season of the current ruleset next year.

Speaking on the Sky Sports F1 YouTube channel, journalist Craig Slater shared the latest information he had heard about Adrian Newey’s next steps.

Aston Martin are the latest team to step up their interest in Newey and Lawrence Stroll has already responded to his and his team’s latest demands.

James Vowles would love to bring Newey to Williams but the team are unlikely to be able to match the financial might that some of their rivals have and their car requires an awful lot more work than many others on the grid to become championship contenders.

Slater now suggests that Ferrari’s hopes of signing Newey have rather diminished after hoping to finally provide him with the opportunity to work alongside Lewis Hamilton next year.

Team principal Frederic Vasseur has already hired several key backroom staff but looks more and more likely to miss out on the crown jewel of Formula 1 design.

Ferrari’s chances of signing Adrian Newey have ‘rather diminished’

Speaking about Newey’s future, Slater said: “Who gets Adrian Newey now? A key question.

“We’ve been reporting last week that Aston Martin are in pole position to sign him. He is the man who can build the championship-winning cars.

“If Aston [Martin] get him that’s a big plus for them but I’m hearing McLaren are also interested, Mercedes are exploring the opportunity to sign him as well.

“And Ferrari, people are telling me those talks have rather diminished in terms of trying to lure Newey in but who knows?

“He has not yet made a decision Newey himself, so what ultimately will most appeal to him.”

Adrian Newey has time on his side to decide his next Formula 1 team

Red Bull understandably made sure in Newey’s contract that he couldn’t immediately jump ship and join one of their rivals as soon as he decided he wanted to leave.

He won’t officially stop working for Red Bull until the first quarter of 2025, which gives him the luxury of being able to take his time before working out which project he wants to tackle next.

Aston Martin are pushing hard to sign Newey and if his chances of joining Ferrari have diminished then that puts them in a very strong position.

Fernando Alonso committed his future to the team very early on in the season and it would make sense for him to do so if he’s had assurances that Lawrence Stroll is set to heavily strengthen the staff around him.

The arrival of Honda power units in 2026 is also exciting given their recent success with Red Bull.

However, Williams have shown how committed they are to tempting Newey back to the team by offering him shares in the company.
